The Accidental Embroiderer

A brace of free squirrels

First, I have to apologise for missing my regular weekly post last week. We spent a very enjoyable few days in Edinburgh, which put everything in life behind schedule. Edinburgh is a wonderful place – beautiful and exciting – and although I lived there for several years there’s still a lot of fascinating things to see which are new to me

Anyway, it’s June and time for another freebie. I was going to offer one of my favourite animals from a past collection, a little grey squirrel, but then I remembered that grey squirrels aren’t very popular here in Britain. I have nothing against them myself: after all, it’s not their fault that they were imported to this country and have since made rather a nuisance of themselves. But I also have sympathy for the beleaguered native red squirrel so I thought it might be best to offer both kinds. So for June, here are two squirrels, red and grey. If you’d like the files, just drop a comment to the blog and ask for them. (If you’re new to the freebies, click on “Free Designs” on the menu above for more information)

  1. Yes, please, I’d love your squirrels.
    🙂
I really like the way you did the texture on the coats. You are supremely good at fur texture.
And I’m glad you had some fun in the city. You need a break from working so hard every now and then!
    🙂

  2. Yes, please, I would love to have your squirrels. I didn’t get your May design… You replied to me but I think I may have forgot to ask you as I was so caught up commenting on your incredible
    talent…
    Thank you, Christine

  3. The way you digitized the different stitches to create the texture for the fur on your squirrels is so realistic! I would love to have your red and gray squirrels! Thank you for considering my request! Sounds like you had a fantastic time in Edinburgh last week!

  4. I too love the texture on the squirrels. My grandson is learning the names of animals. I can’t wait for him to say squirrel! I’d love to get the free files.

  5. please, I would love to have your squirrels.
have you used embroidery thread or cotton thread?

  8. Love the squirrels. These will look great on shirts for my grandsons & Godson. I would love to get the free designs. Thank you very much.

  9. I love how you have digitized the fur on the squirrels. You make them look so realistic. I’d love to have them. Thank you for your generosity.

  10. Again–wonderful design. Grey squirrels are pests here (NH, USA) too but watching them eating from a corn cob was one of my dying mother’s last joys. Even though they eat so much sunflower seed from our birdfeeders, they will always have a special place in my heart. Please send the design to me.

  11. I have an annoying dark grey squirrel eating many of my flowers in my flower bed, but I like yours much better! Thanks for the nicely digitized designs, Mia! Great job (as usual!)

  12. Yes, please! I would like your squirrels. We have the grey in our yard. They’ve been in the attic, had babies in our front tree, chase each other round the tree trunks. They bury our pecans which later sprout! I most enjoy watching them lap water. We had drought a few years ago, I put water dishes on the ground for the birds to drink. I found them bathing and for the first time saw the thirsty squirrels….so entertaining… Thanks for your designs, Joan

  13. Would love to have these squirrels. Since I’m in the US, the grey squirrel is more familiar, but they are both very cute.

  14. I would love to have your squirrels. I do like the grey squirrel as well as the red. They are cute and funny and I love watching their antics here in Oxford, NJ. Thank you so much. Best to you, and glad you had a good time in Edinburgh.

  15. At some locations here in the US, we also have black squirrels and they are a sight to see. However, I would be pleased to have a brace of squirrels minus the black squirrel.
    Thanks so much.

  16. You’re going to get a laugh about this one. I really need those squirrels, and here’s why. My husband once saw a cartoon about a dog busy doing something and was immediately side-tracked because he saw a squirrel go by. I unfortunately do that to my husband. He’ll be telling me something and my attention goes somewhere else for a brief moment. It used to piss him off, but now we both just yell “squirrel”.
I embroidered a Valentine’s Day card for him with a squirrel half way between the text. “Happy Valen….(then the squirrel design)…tine’s Day”. He framed the card and has it sitting out on his desk. I’m making him an anniversary card with 2 squirrels hugging each other. So I’m now always looking for new squirrel designs for me to continue with our private joke.

  17. They are adorable. Love the designs. Would love to be able to make one! Great work as usual!

  18. That is too cute.
I would love to get the squirrels. We feed them, along with the birds and anything else that shows up at the feeders.

  19. I really like the 2 squirrels you have done. Would love to get them. THANKS very much. 🙂

  20. Love the gray squirrel live in california and have these little guys
    everywhere.Would love to have them.

  21. I would love your squirrels. I have lots of squirrels that come and go in my yard. I love watching them jump from tree to tree and then hunt for their buried treasures in the yard.

  22. I really like your squirrels…We have them all around us..even in our flower beds. I would like to stitch out your designs…
    thanks, dlp

  23. My 90 y/o sister in law just lost her 91 y/o sister. Their biggest joy was to sit in the back yard, watching the squirrels enjoy the food the sisters provided for them.
I’d love your squirrels…..I look forward to receiving them….
    Thank you!!

  24. Hi Mia, Great job, just like all the above comments, I love the texturing you did with the stitches to make both squirrels look so real. I live in Washington state, just 2 hours north of us is Vancouver, Canada. In your spare time, if you search in your computer for black squirrels of Stanley Park. I was so shocked to see a black squirrel. Maybe you can digitize a black one to add to your collection. Thanks for sharing your squirrels with us. Deena

  25. Would love to have your squirrels, please. So cheeky… Might ask my daughter to paint me a piney background for them.
    Thank you for your generousness

  26. Mia, your squirrel designs are delightful. Your designs are always beautifully detailed and unique. I would be pleased to have these designs.
    Thank you, Joyce

  27. I just found your blog and am amazed at all of your beautiful embroidery! All of your designs are just beautiful! I would love to have your squirrel designs. I used to have an embroidery business, and have done some digitizing, and I am in awe at the complexity and beauty of your designs…you are a true artist! These days I just embroider gifts for my daughters and their families, and occasionally keep a dishtowel for myself, ha!

  28. I would love your squirrels please. Our campus is overrun with grey squirrels, kind of a second mascot! 🙂
Both are beautiful designs, I love the texture of them…
    Thank you!

  29. Please send me those cute squirrels! For some reason my sister is obsessed with squirrels and, if I ever finish with this move, I’d love to make her an apron with them on the pockets. They’re both great!

  30. In Oregon, the gray squirrel is the native and the brown one the interloper. And I’ve been busy trying to keep the gray ones out of my bird feeder today. I look forward to embroidering these wee beasties.

  31. I would love to have your squirrel designs. Beautiful! I am planning a country quilt that I think they would look beautiful on.

  32. There is one of the little grey goofballs digging a hole in my garden right now. I would love to have the squirrel designs. Thanks so much for offering them.

  33. Squirrels! I love them! I also like the Fish in Unruffled Lakes piece, too. It’s so creative!!

  34. I love both of them! Please send me your squirrels.
Thank you so much for your generosity!
