The Accidental Embroiderer

Two freebies with birds and flowers – the first of many?

Well, we made it through the holidays and have come out the other side, and I hope you had a happy and peaceful time of it. But now I must push on with a LOT of new projects which I’ve started, but not got even near to finishing.

I have noticed a monotonous sameness to most of these projects – that is, they all seem to involve birds and leaves and flowers in various combinations. Nothing wrong with birds and flowers, of course, but you can have too much of a good thing. So I’m desperately trying to cut back on this theme and get on with something new and different

Now, this means that I have a lot of birds-and-flowers designs which don’t have parts to play in larger projects, so I’m hoping that blog readers will be able to offer some of them a home. And we’ll start this month with a couple of small squares which were supposed to be a part of a large pieced wall hanging, but the hanging gradually changed in composition, so these little squares didn’t fit any more.

And design number 2

They’re for the 4×4 inch (100 x 100 mm) hoop, and are embroidery only, no appliqué. By the way, many thanks to my friend Cherri, who stitched these out for me at the time when my machine was in the shop for servicing.

Here's the first one, and here's the second, both in .pes v.6. I hope they work well for you, and you had better look out for more designs on the birds and flowers theme during the start of 2024

  1. Thank you for your wonderful website! This problem has happened before with another set of your designs. I use vip format and can open design number 1 but not number 2. Is it possible to send number 2, in vip, to my e-mail?
    Thanks again
    Jane

  2. Thank you for the birds. Have you ever thought of trying machine bargello? I just embroidered my 1st attempt using 5 primary colors and I think it’s stunning. I would love to see more, in maybe flame and chevron designs?

  3. Hi Mia, Thank you for the beautiful bird and flower designs! I am sure everyone will agree that we will all be excited to be the beneficiaries of any of you upcoming lovely bird and flower designs!!
Hope you and your family had an awesome Christmas and New Year’s eve!
    Thank you so much!!

  4. Thank you for these happy birds! We just got 6″ of snow and we’re headed for more cloudy and REALLY cold weather. I needed something cheery!

  5. Very nice; thank you, Mia. I’m thinking of corners or centers on placemats, along with some of your other wonderful birds. Keep up the great work, and have a good, safe New Year.

  6. Thanks for the birds. I know just how to use them. I have had some difficulties with my machine also, and some with the computer. I hope to be back in shape soon. The birds will look perfect on some new shirts for spring. Right now we have snow so spring is a distant thought.
Thinking of new ideas, how about some Maya designs. They are still investigating all the new hidden places. Their hieroglyphs are very unique.
    Happy New Year, Linda

  7. One can never love enough of God’s feathered creations alighting upon various foilage and yours are always such delights. That said, I have truly enjoyed all of your animal designs, even the insects. Perhaps a winged insect or two or even choices from among the ground bound? Your Celtic designs always tickle my heart, too, with your flowing angles and curves. The suggestion above, by Linda, of Mayan designs also excites me. Even an Egyptian hieroglyph would be insanely exciting. Something a bit different from the preceding would be a shelf of scientific, scholarly, or religious books (whichever tickled your fancy) with applique bookbindings and little stitched knicknacks on the shelves… perhaps a slumbering moggy atop it or one of the shelves….
