The Accidental Embroiderer

Run, rabbit!

OK, I know it’s only spring (although at the moment here in the Scottish Highlands it’s snowing heavily) but all the same, as I’ve mentioned, I must make a start on some works for our summer exhibitions. These works need to be more complicated and “arty” than the decorative things I usually do, so they take a lot more time

At our exhibitions, I’ve noticed that pictures with animals are popular, so I thought I should do some pictures featuring our local wildlife, and I’ve started with a running rabbit

One thing I love about using embroidery for animal pictures is that you can get such interesting textures with the threads. Of course in a conventional painting you can add some texture with a paintbrush, but you never get the same three-dimensional effect that embroidery gives, and it really adds a lot of interest to a picture – assuming of course that it’s a picture of a furry animal! You can't really see the effect very well in this scan, but you'd notice it if you saw the real thing

  1. He is a lovely rabbit or is he a hare? He will be purchased quickly since so many people like the cute rabbits. I imagine people still hunt them for food. I have only had it once. I am not a fan of it. I rather like to think of rabbits like Peter Rabbit, living a nice life in the countryside.
Do you have to create the special stitches for fur or is it a program? All of mine are just flat stitch or a decorative stitch that really doesn’t go with fur. I know there are al sorts of fur stitches, I have seen them on special dog designs online.
You had better do a few rabbits, they will sell fast, maybe a beehive with bees around, people feel good about bees with a hive. And, maybe a big smiley frog with his tongue reaching for a mosquito. Nature is a good topic.

  2. Hi Mia, your rabbit is so cute, interesting to read Linda’s comments, yes nature is a great wonder. I know this design will sell well, the textures you add to your work is so amazing, just like the cats you did some time ago. I still use those a lot. WELL DONE again.
