The Accidental Embroiderer

Yet more crows…

I never quite realised how much I liked crows until they began turning up in large numbers in these designs. They have such strong personalities, and there are certainly a lot of them around here, so there’s no getting away from them. They seem to like old trees and derelict buildings, and I couldn’t resist sketching some of them as they flew around Glenbuchat Castle, which is an old ruined 16th century castle not far from here. Their hoarse, echoing cries seem to suit this ancient building in a way that more melodic birdsong wouldn’t

Crows over Glenbuchat Castle

There are a lot of wonderful historic castles around here and I keep meaning to do a series of designs featuring them, so I hope this will be the first of several

  1. Hi Mia, this is a spectacular embroidery. The castle and the blue background make a magnificent setting for the stark contrast of the crows. It would make a wonderful medieval tapestry.

  2. I enjoy crows too..never realized how many different sounds they make to communicat and
their strong family ties. I especially enjoyed all the textures in the castle.

  3. Mia, fantastic design. Love how that really looks like an old castle and you are right, the crows add something that song birds just couldn’t.

  4. Hello Mia,
Quel plaisir de retrouver ces corbeaux !
Je vois que tu manies l’appliqué avec adresse et finesse
    Bravo

  5. Mia, every time you put a piece together, I think wow, this is my favorite then you top it with another design. This is now my favorite.
I’m curious on your process, do you paint up fabric sit it aside then let it talk to you later or do you have a picture in your mind as to what you want to do, then step by step create it. I have so many unfinished projects because I’m not sure what to do next, I put it away then come back to it later…but nothing I make is as spectacular as what you design. Thank you so much for sharing.
PS… I like the idea of a series of quilt block featuring different castles including wildlife…

  6. This is a really different look than a lot of your recent designs. The texture and stitching for the castle is so different from what you usually use for your wildlife. It feels more solid, which is perfect.
It makes me wonder if you can combine the solid feel for the stones with your wispy techniques for clouds or mist or something like that, and mix it with the wildlife?
    Great piece! Again.
    🙂
