The Accidental Embroiderer

Some chaffinches for the exhibition

11 August 2017. Right, it’s about time I posted some pictures of the work I’ve been doing for the two upcoming exhibitions. Both exhibitions will feature works inspired by this part of the world, so there will be a lot of Scottish birds and animals.

Chaffinches on the wires

And here’s the first – a little flock of chaffinches sitting on the telephone wires that run down our road. I have to confess that my first thought was to make the birds crows, but I slapped myself on the wrist and told myself that I’d done enough crows for the time being, and I should look at some other kind of birds for a change. And I’m glad I did – the chaffinches have cheerful autumnal colours, and there are a lot of them around here so I think it’s about time I gave them a picture of their own

  1. Hi Mia, I am sure you will get a lot of compliments on this exhibition of chaffinches in different poses on the telephone wires. It is fabulous with your beautiful hand painted blue background to highlight the birds. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  2. Love this one! Very interesting and, for some reason, my eyes are drawn to each bird. Love them in all their poses and their cheerful colors! Glad they’re not crows too; lately those guys have been waking me up at the literal crack of dawn with their calls.
No overhead wires here but we do have little finches that visit our porch every afternoon. They just love to grab onto whatever they can and sing their sweet song!
Glad to learn of more shows to come!

  3. Mia, what lovely chaffinches, in all of their various poses. Can’t decide which one I like the best as they are all so unique. I can almost hear them singing. You will be a great success at your exhibition.

  4. Thank you for sharing. Your talent is inspiring. Every time you move out of your comfort zone, you inspire me to try something new. Right now it is hand embroidery for crazy quilt blocks. Always avoided handwork except for knitting and crochet.

  5. I agree with Gail — the different poses really make the piece. And I love the irregular angles of the wires in the background.
The colors are great, the birds’ markings are wonderful.
I agree that it should draw a lot of attention at the exhibit!
    Wonderful work! As usual.
    🙂
