The Accidental Embroiderer

Birds from the exhibition

A couple of weeks ago I reported on our annual NEOS exhibition, where I sold a respectable number of things. One thing was clear to me – although people admired many of the pieces, almost everything that was sold involved animals or birds. This is no surprise to me – I prefer them myself, which is probably why they appeal to other people too! One piece that was sold was a special favourite of mine – a panel of three wagtails, which went home with a friend and neighbour who lives not far from here

Three wagtails

Wagtails will probably not be familiar to American blog readers, – I think they live only in Europe. But they're charming little birds who love nothing better than to run around lawns, looking for insects in the short grass and bobbing their long tails wildly up and down. They are definitely well-named!

  1. I love the how you painted the background to make it seem as if it is really grass that the birds are on. From the picture, it looks like it could be a photo. You did a great job on it. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Those birds are almost 3D! The background fabric painting is great – it really lets the wagtails stand out. We don’t have them, but Thrashers are fun to watch running around the yard, tossing up piles of leaves in search of insects. Your English Robin looks different than ours, too…I love their fat little red bellies. Have you done any work using them?

  3. I see why they are popular, they are stunning. Birds are a favourite of mine also, we have quite a few babies around our yard at the moment. They are just so adorable to watch, we find it very relaxing to sit an enjoy nature, I do have some spare places on my walls.

  4. Hi Mia, I can see why this piece sold. Your hand painted back ground is spectacular and the Wagtails seem to almost pop off of the fabric. Have an awesome week!
