The Accidental Embroiderer

The first of many?

Well, that break was just a little TOO long! I hope I haven’t lost many readers because of my long silence. But I did have a good excuse! The operation went well and I can now see a lot better than I could before, and thank goodness I can now get back to drawing and digitising

But before the operation I spent some time going though all my old embroidery files, and believe me, there are a LOT of them – several thousand at least. And it’s such a pity that all these designs are just sitting in my computer doing nothing at all. So I thought – why not give them away to embroiderers who might be able to use them?

So for a while now, most of my posts will include a selection of free designs from my past embroidering life. They will be a pretty random collection but perhaps you might be able to find a use for some of them. Now, I’d better warn you that none of these designs were originally intended to be passed on – they were for my use only. So there may well be glitches (un-necessary jumps, etc.) which I never bothered to correct. All these designs will be in .pes v.6

So – now for the first of what I hope will be many! You may remember that some time ago I posted a design that was roughly based on the designs of the famous artist Escher. Well, today I’m passing on a real Escher! The three interlocking birds were taken from one of his drawings.

A real Escher!

It’s for the 4×4 inch (100 mm x 100 mm) hoop email me by clicking HERE

The second design is a pair of interlocking fish – goodness knows where I got the idea but it makes an interesting embroidery.

Two interlocking fish

It’s for the 5 x 8 inch (130 x 180 mm) hoop and HERE it is

As always, if you have any problems with these designs, just let me know via the “Comments” page on the blog. Good luck!

  1. I really love this very real Escher- and those two fishes, too. For me, there is a kind of celtic appearance in the design. It invited me to play with somehow, and so I turned the image upside down…it’s always a big surprise what will happen with any design, how it will change and which hidden effects will appear. It’s a very versatile design, of course.

  2. Glad to hear you are through your surgery and on to many other ideas. The designs are unique and will make for some special items. I have slowed down in my embroidery for a while, but since I just ordered 7 shirts for my husband, he will wonder why they are plain…😁
I will see how they might work for those shirts, I will tell him they are a code for something. I had been reading some ancient history and many symbols are codes or have special meanings. Of course I will have to make that up.
Thanks for all your great designs.

  3. Thank you for your generosity. So glad your surgery went well and you are back at doing what you love.

  4. Neither of the designs would download for me. I know I am not doing anything wrong. Would you kindly help me out? Thank you so much.

  5. Please disregard the previous message. I tried several times and it didn’t work But of course as soon as I send a message it worked, Thank you. Got them.

  6. Thank you very much for the designs. I can’t wait to put them to good use. I am so glad your eye surgery went well. My husband went through this last year. It makes living so much better. Praying you continue getting better every day in all things!!!

  7. Thank you for the lovely designs. Glad that surgery was successful and you are seeing better.

  8. Link for interlocking fish isn’t working. I’ve tried 2 different browsers. Thank you in advance.

  9. Oh My Gosh Mia, they are awesome. I cannot WAIT to embroider them on SOMEthing … ANYthing. You are the best!

  10. I think I speak for all of us, that we would wait forever and maybe even a bit longer for you to post again. I’m so glad your surgery went well and that you are on the mend. Love those fish! They would look great on so many things like that boring denim jacket I saw hanging in a closet a few days back…. The Accidental Embroiderer: it’s no accident that her designs look great.

  11. Thank you Mia for the lovely birds and fish designs! They are Fabulous as always! Glad to hear your eye surgery went well! Your designs will look awesome on anything!

  12. Oh, aren’t these beautiful! I agree with the comment about a Celtic spirit to them. The interlocking designs are always so striking, no matter what they’re embroidered upon. I used your design of two birds looking in different directions, but with tail feathers interlocking, on a tote bag. I can’t tell you how many admiring comments it has earned! Thank you so much for your generous soul!
